Building information modelling (BIM)

BIM files Conex Bänninger >B< Press BIM

Future population trends mean that we have to look at more efficient ways to design and build. 3D BIM (Building Information Modelling) helps us explore design options and visualise buildings before they are built as well as create and manage information on a building project from design and build, to operation and future management.

Space, systems and products can be shown relative to each other as well as to the whole project. You can get as close as you can to experiencing the final project without building anything, allowing for review and refinement during the process and prevent mistakes from happening. A BIM model will contain all the information and parameters needed for different sectors to connect their information and requirements all in one place.

BIM objects

A product’s BIM object can be a combination of many things: information content, a product’s properties, a geometrical representation for the product and or a recognisable, physical appearance and data that enables the object to be positioned and behave as it would in reality.

During the build phase, when manufacturer specific BIM objects are used and connected to the database, they are automatically updated with the latest product information so that everyone using their products has that information to hand even years after completion. Working with BIM becomes a team process. Each of the different contributors to the project working with BIM are therefore integrated, combining processes and technology and forming a team that all work to the same standards.

Data rich BIM objects from Conex Bänninger

Project participants rely on the provision of data-rich BIM objects from manufacturers. It is equally important that data can be shared. Conex Bänninger provide BIM objects for all of their >B< Press ranges as well as valves according to ISO 23386:2020 which means that they are machine-readable, versatile and consistent across different software.

As a baseline, BIM store objects meet the standards set down in the Bimstore Bible which ensures content is portable and performs as expected, as well as:
•    Always display uniformly
•    Will be a standard, consistent, accurate representation.
•    Be compatible with industry standards and is usable from design to facilities management and operation.

The content of the Bimstore guidelines are structured from the content of the following standards:
•    BS 8541 standards for a library of objects for architecture, engineering and construction.
•    BS1192- 4 Governing the collaborative production of information. Fulfilling employer’s information exchange requirements using COBie
•    BS1192:3 - Asset Management & Operation
•    PAS1192:2013 Specification for information management for the operational phase of assets using building information modelling
•    Autodesk Revit Architecture 2010 Families Guide Autodesk Revit Model Content Style Guide
•    Autodesk Revit Model Content Style Guide
•    AEC (UK) BIM Standard for Autodesk Revit

BIM: the future of construction

Digital modelling is helping the construction industry to achieve government targets of ‘lower cost, faster delivery, lower emissions and improvements in exports...’*.

By allowing design and construction teams to work more efficiently and capture data created during the process, BIM is accelerating the use of digital modelling and is why we will see a distinct increase in its use globally.
